EMI PROTECTION

Immunity from electronic components.

GET IN TOUCH

Radio Frequency Interference

EMI is known as electromagnetic interference which is a disruption from another source. EMI is also referred to as Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). EMI happens when the operation is in close proximity to a device that emits signals. EMI can be caused by a variety of different things such as telephones, Bluetooth speakers, microwaves, sensors and many more. E3 Displays offers EMI shielding film integrated into LCD screens which deters outside magnetic interferences. No matter what industry you operate in, you want to have the security of knowing that you have a reliable display screen that performs with no interruptions.

E3 Displays is continuously developing innovative ways to combat EMI. EMI can cause power flows and spikes with undesirable effects on both data collected by medical equipment and the way MDs interact with each other. Having EMI shielding is important for numerous reasons. One main reason is that it builds a shield that helps enhance Wi-Fi connections and electronics in commercial buildings. Some of the main benefits of EMI shielding are increased system reliability, normal operation of electronic displays and better function of a system without interruption.

E3 Display’s EMI protection prevents electromagnetic interference from disrupting your display. EMI protection increases system reliability, data security, and reloading times.

Two Types of EMI

EMI Filtering vs EMI Shielding

EMI Filtering

EMI filtering controls the amount of EM energy that flows through a display, directing it to the appropriate place, using a combination of capacitors and inductors. Using an EMI filter over an EMI shield can create a thinner and more lightweight display. Filters focus on the conducted noise while shields tend to focus on EMI emissions themselves. It is possible to use both a filter and a shield.

EMI Shielding

EMI shielding protects the entirety of the display in the form of a copper, aluminum, or stainless steel plate. This not only protects the display unit from EMI but limits the amount of interference that it produces itself. EMI shields also have the ability to absorb some of the EM wave and convert it into heat energy. In return, heat dissipation features may need to be installed.

Connecting to EMI Layers

Connecting to EMI Layers

EMI layers can be applied to the front or the back of glass layers. A conductive material is utilized across the plane of the glass that will overlap the product bezel opening. When this layer is connected to ground, the opening in the bezel now has a conductive path to manage EMI noise. E3 most commonly applies these conductive layers to the back of the glass so the conductive medium is not exposed to the user and environment. In order for the EMI layer to be conducted to ground, a path must be established. Since the glass is sized to the display, E3 Displays will provide the glass with a conductive ink/tape that is located on the back of the glass at a similar width to the display bezel and wrap around to the front of the glass. An EMI gasket can then be used to connect through the established path and utilize the EMI layer

Design Options

Design Options

EMI Tape – Metal Mesh

Many EMI problems can be solved with the use of EMI tape and insulation layers such as a mesh filter. EMI shielding Mesh filters allow for maximum optical performance with minimal reflection. In metal mesh solutions where a film mesh layer is laminated to the back of the glass, EMI tape is used to wrap from the back of the mesh to the front of the glass. EMI tape is cut to CAD specifications and  is undetectable when installed.

Silver Epoxy Busbar – ITO

A busbar is a strip of conductive material that is applied to the edges of a display as an EMI shield. In ITO glass solutions where a sputtered layer of conductive ITO is applied directly to the glass, an AG conductive busbar can be printed from the ITO layer, side of the glass, to the front of the glass. E3 silver epoxy busbars are sized to the bezel width and are not visible when installed.
